Why Your Ideas Are Worthless

Walking away from the Brisbane KPI event on Saturday evening there was a spring in my step. I felt extremely motivated and excited about what will come next. And, the best part is that ‘next’ is up to me!

For those who that haven’t heard of KPI, it stands for Key Person of Influence. It’s an event series and brand accelerator program that’s been rolled out around the world and focuses on five key steps: Pitch, Publish, Productise, Profile and Partnerships.

Those five steps are championed by some of the best:

  • Ian Elliot – Pitch (former chairman and CEO of George Patterson)
  • Andrew Griffiths – Publish (Australia’s #1 small business author)
  • James Tuckerman – Productise (Founder of Anthill Magazine)
  • Kylie Bartlett – Profile (the Web Celeb)
  • Cathy Burke – Partnership (CEO of The Hunger Project)

The recurring theme for the event was centred on each person in the room establishing themselves as THE key person of influence in their industry niche.

I got a lot of value from the day but I believe that what you get out of an event like this is dictated by your life and experiences thus far, which is why instead of talking about the event, I want to share with you my ‘wow’ moments from the day.

The time is now and the time is ours

There is such a massive shift in the global landscape (particularly when it comes to entrepreneurs) and it’s shifting in our favour. There is a massive boom and it’s an “entrepreneurial revolution” as KPI Founder Daniel Priestley describes it.

For too long, I think that small business and individuals  (particularly we females) have felt like we can’t cut it with the big boys and we’re not equipped to play in the big leagues.

Well, you know what? We are. So man, woman, child – anyone with a burning desire to be successful – the time is now and you do have what it takes.

We all have something of value to share

Information, knowledge or understanding that we take for granted is likely to be something that is unfamiliar to someone else. All the stuff we’ve got packed into our heads is a reservoir of value, so put it out there.

That was the message from Andrew Griffiths when he was talking about publishing our knowledge. In his own words…

“If I can write a book, anyone can write a book,” he said.

Stop playing small

We’re all guilty of this at one time or another. You know, underselling ourselves or not stepping up because we fear we’re not ready or don’t quite belong. If we keep doing that, we’re always going to be small.

Instead, we should play big; like we’re already there and that we already own our spot. We all need to be envisaging ourselves in that bigger place and thinking like we’re already there and making our decisions from that point of success.

You’re amazing, so get out there and tell people.

Success is not about doing it alone, it’s about bringing on board the people you need to help you get there

This is something I think many women grapple with. We’re trying to be all things for all people. We’ve all seen the articles about women trying to be a wife, mother, best friend, career superstar, a community volunteer and social butterfly. It’s exhausting to read, let alone live it.

For me, this was like a smack in the face.  I know I’ve been trying to do too much on my own in order to prove myself. I think that knowing you can’t do it all and putting your hand up for some assistance is more telling than trying to do it all by yourself.

As Cathy Burke from The Hunger Project explains…

“It’s about bringing different ideas and people together through partnership,” she said.

Through partnership you’re building a tribe of people around you to support your journey to success.

That is not weak, it’s powerful.

KPI ideas are worthless

Ideas are worthless, action is everything

It can be a bitter pill to swallow but it’s true, isn’t it?  That was the message that Daniel Priestley drove home in his closing address.

“I hate to break it to you, but ideas are worthless,” he said.

Truth be told it doesn’t matter what our idea is or how great it is, if we’re not willing to take ACTION and follow it through, that idea will get us nowhere.

The power, success, achievement and satisfaction come from taking action.

Stop thinking, start doing.

This event has a business and entrepreneurial focus but there are plenty of lessons that we can apply to life as well. If you want to spend a day in a room full of people who are willing to invest in themselves and learn something new along the way, then I’d recommend going along to the next KPI event in your city.
